About The Department

Year of Establishment: 1961

Electrical Engineering Department started its journey from the very inception of the institute in 1961-1962 and continues to serve the society by producing quality engineers capable to make impact to its evolution from an industrial-based to knowledge-based economy. Over the last six decades, the department has been producing competent engineers who worked and hold key positions in many major industries and academia around the globe. Electrical Engineering Program is enriched with theoretical engineering concepts & understanding and practical demonstration and is designed to meet the modern trends in the field of electrical technology, encompassing wider technological perspective. At present, Electrical Engineering Department offers one undergraduate programme (B.Tech) and one post-graduate programme (M.Tech. with a specialization of Power Electronics & Drives). The program includes study of engineering core & interdisciplinary, basic sciences & humanities, computer skills, management with blend of design project completion and presentation for useful applications. Electrical Engineering Department has a blend of renowned and experienced as well as young and dynamic personalities as faculty, who are involved in imparting quality education. Faculty members strive to foster and encourage teaching methodology that is both practical and theoretical in approach. Aptly equipped laboratories like Basic Electrical Engineering, Circuit Theory, Electrical Machines, Power Systems, Electrical Measurements, Control Systems, Microprocessors, Simulation, Power Electronics and Drives which were upgraded under World Bank Funded TEQIP programme, are giving the scope of practical exposure to the students, which in turn increase the confidence to face the practical problems in the field of engineering in a better way. The Department aims at providing standard and quality programmes in undergraduate and post graduate educations. Students are provided with a solid foundation to formulate, solve and analyze engineering problems. The Department trains students who will not only be technically adept but also disciplined and morally upstanding, to be team players, to be able to work on multidisciplinary projects and also have the ability to relate engineering issues to the broader social context.

Welcome to the web page of the Department of Electrical Engineering, JGEC, Jalpaiguri. To meet the growing demand of Electrical Engineers in the Government and private sectors, the Department is putting up the best efforts to produce highly trained and capable engineers who can take up the challenges of the real world. The quality of teaching learning, conduct guidelines and departmental activities are designed and monitored to produce competent and successful engineers. The Department strives to provide its students with appropriate knowledge and practical skills in electrical engineering so that they become well rounded engineering graduates, who will not only be technically adept but also disciplined and morally upstanding. Department has been taking up true initiatives to encourage nationally and internationally acclaimed research contributions from the students as well as from the faculty. The aim of Electrical Engineering is to provide standard and quality programmes of undergraduate and post graduate education; to be a technically active unit advancing the knowledge of engineering; and to serve the community and industry as an agent of technological, educational innovation and advancement. This institute is dedicated to transforming young students into proficient professionals who would be globally competitive. As far as the department is concerned, our department aims to prepare students for the industry and be successful in higher studies. The electrical engineering department has specialized faculties in all important areas of electrical engineering such as power system, power electronics & drives, control & automation, measurements, machines and signal processing. The academic and research activities in the department focus on the frontier areas of electrical engineering such as power quality studies, Condition assessment of Electrical equipment, distributed generation, soft switching of converters, high voltage & insulation research, signal processing. These activities help to explore the cutting edge technologies, which keep our students and staff in touch with latest developments in the field of Electrical Engineering. Our major emphasis of imparting technical training to encourage curiosity and innovative ideas underlying among our students and lay a foundation from where they can acquire quick learning ability and adaptability with the fast changing needs of the industry. Our faculty members are experts in the areas they teach. Not only do they provide a solid grounding in the academic theories and concepts of their specialty, they also provide the students challenges facing their discipline. They provide the students the right balance of theory and practice. Educational tours and industrial visits are regularly organized to enhance the practical knowledge of the students and to interact with the recent technologies used in the industries. Tracer study reveals that our alumni are employed in good positions in different national and multinational organizations. Alumni support has always been a great driving force in the progress of our institute and we value our continued relationship with all alumni.

Our Mission

[1] Primary mission of the Department of Electrical Engineering is to produce quality human resource with capacity to serve the fraternity in a wide variety of roles including science, engineering, teaching, research, entrepreneurship and management.

[2] To prepare citizens who would grow to be competent enough to contribute significantly with personal integrity and civic responsibility for the betterment of mankind throughout their careers and profession.

[3] To promote and significantly contribute towards development of technologies and innovations, appropriate to sustainable economic growth and development of the society through enrichment of quality of life.

[1] Prime achievement of the department is that a number of electrical engineers produced from this department working successfully in key positions in major industries and academia across the country.

[2] UG, PG and faculty members have published more than 180 research papers in reputed journals and conferences in last 7 years. (2010 to 2016)

[3] Students have been showing technical competencies and innovative technical skills by taking part and competing in technical events in national levels in IITs and NITs.


[1] Imparting technical knowledge, skill and competence to identify, comprehend and solve problem in industry, research and academics related to Electrical Engineering.

[2] Prepare the students to successfully work in various public and private sector organizations, at regional, state, national and international levels, with professional competence and ethical administrative acumen.

[3] Frame the students to improve their technical and intellectual capabilities through life-long learning process, which may include professional career and/or postgraduate education, for successful adaptation to technological and cultural changes and to foster adept functioning in society.

[4] Enhancing ability of the students to work as an individual, as a team leader or as a member of a team in multicultural global environment.

[5] Putting emphasis on areas such as communication skills, professional and ethical responsibility, lifelong learning and contemporary issues to complement the technical aspects of the engineering course.

[6] Fulfill the needs of society in solving technical problems using engineering principles, tools and practices, in an ethical and responsible manner.
