Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College(JGEC) is a premier institute for quality technical education in India. Established in 1961, the college has produced many talented engineers till date. It holds the distinction of being the second oldest engineering college in West Bengal.
JGEC is affiliated to MAKAUT, and the courses conducted by it have the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE) and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The College Conducts Bachelor's degree in 6 Branches and Master's degree in two branches of Engineering.

Established on 7 August 1961, the Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College is the fifth oldest of all technical institutions (centrally and state funded) besides the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (1856, Formerly Bengal Engineering and Science University), Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (1951), Jadavpur University (1955) and National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (1960, Formerly REC Durgapur) in the state of West Bengal.

In the Initial years JGEC was under the University of Calcutta. For the period between 1963 and 1999, the college was affiliated to the University of North Bengal ,which handed over the rich mantle of technical excellence to the West Bengal University Of Technology, Founded under the West Bengal University Of Technology Act, 2000.
In 2012, the institute was granted complete autonomy by the University Grants Commission, India, thus giving it the freedom to set its own curriculum and manage its own finances. With affiliation to the West Bengal University Of Technology, the institute is now an autonomous engineering college under The Government of West Bengal.

Eco friendly campus and sustainability: A Green Campus is a place where environmentally friendly practices and education combine to promote sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the campus. These strategies need to be incorporated into the institutional planning and budgeting processes with the aim of developing a clean and green campus. Jalpaiguri Govt. Engineering College is striving continuously for making its campus green and clean, by imposing sustainable and eco-friendly thinking into both academics and student activities. it stands against extravagance in utilization of its resources. Considering several eco-friendly issues, it has made couple of plans deliberately, for developing an altruistic academic ambience.
